Cold Words

Ice is some kind of solid that forms when water freezes. What we generally know is just a single word of 'ice' to describe that cold, solid thing. But, do you know that some ice have different name depends of their condition? Dialecs of Alaskan Inupiaq have about hundred words for sea ices. These definitions are from the Wales Inupiaq Sea Ice Dictionaries. Some of them are:


1. Auniq (n): Thin, Rotting, and unsafe ice with melted holes.
    + Auniq : Es yang tipis, retak, dan tidak aman, serta penuh dengan lubang-lubang es yang meleleh.


2. Analuaq (n): Part of an ice floe covered by walrus excrement
    + Analuaq : Bagian dari es yang mengapung di permukaan laut, yang terlapisi oleh kotoran                anjing laut.


3. Mitivik (n) : Crystals of ice floating in sea water or a fishing hole.
    + Mitivik : Pecahan es yang mengapung di permukaan laut atau kolam pancing.


4. Utuqaq (n): Ice that appears in the Bering Strait every November
    + Utuqaq : Kumpulan es yang muncul pada Selat Bering setiap November.


5. Tuwaiyauti (v) : to drive away on a piece of ice
    + Tuwaiyauti : untuk berpindah tempat dengan es sebagai medianya.


6. Qaaptiniq (n) : Water splashed around a seal's breathing hole in the ice
    + Qaaptiniq : Air yang terpercik di sekeliling lubang nafas anjing laut.
